Using the funds from the Oppenheimer grant, I just placed an order for 10 keyboard packages from Amazon.com. They are due to arrive any day!
Room 408 (kindergarden) has been working hard learning The Twelve Days of Christmas :) I just found out that Schmid Music has received another grant! This grant will provide classroom instruments for use in grades K-3. The new year is going to bring a whole new music class to Schmid! Exciting! We are continuing to explore instrument families in grades 4-8. We are using a really great resource from Carnegie Hall in New York. It is an interactive game that guides you the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten. There are detailed descriptions of each instrument family and games to help learn about the individual instruments. It's completely free to access at home and at school. http://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/ypgto/game.aspx
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are learning the classic American folk song "This Land is Your Land," in third grade. Find the lyrics on the Songs page!
Schmid school has won an Oppenheimer Teacher Incentive Grant in order to purchase a set of keyboards for our students!!!! Our Chargers will soon be able to get their hands on some real instruments and start playing and composing beautiful music! Stay tuned for more information!!
In our 4-5 and 6-8 classes, we are delving into a unit about the instruments of the orchestra. The goal is for each student to be able to identify every instrument by sight, name, and sound by the time we leave for the holiday break. We start by learning about how instruments are categorized into four families based on how they make sound. The Brass Family The Woodwind Family
In fourth and fifth grade we are learning the language of music - Italian. We have been focusing on describing the TEMPO of music using the Italian words allegro (fast), andante (medium or walking speed), and largo (slow). Allegro (fast) Andante (medium/walking speed) Largo (slow)
I posted several new songs to the "Songs" page. Be sure to check out the links and sing them at home. The Schmid Choir is in full swing. We are working on a version of "Titanium" as inspired by PS22 in New York City. Primary classes this week started to explore musical opposites. When we hear sounds that are HIGH, we reach our hands to the sky. When we hear sounds that are low, we touch the floor. We read "How to Speak Moo" and made our voices move up and down. Check out the newly updated "Songs" page for the words to songs and rhymes we have been singing in class.
